Making a violin using an outside mold

Making an outside mold violin is not a new technique, its been in use for many, many years. I have been making instruments using inside molds for years and now I am trying out the inside mold technique. I will be comparing the two building techniques as I go along. So far, the inside mold seems easier to me. Strad’s instruments were also made using the inside molds. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.  (click images to view larger)

The materials are chosen. Ribs, back wood, top wood and scroll.

The ribs have been cut to length and the mold is ready.

The ribs are soaked and ready for bending. the bending iron is beginning to heat up.
The ribs have been bent and placed and clamped to the mold.
